Résumé

À la fin du X^e siècle de notre ère, les Norrois implantent des établissements sur la côte sud-ouest du Groenland, dans deux régions connues sous le nom de Colonie orientale et Colonie occidentale. Ces établissements implantés aux marges occidentales du monde scandinave entretiennent des réseaux d’échanges complexes avec les régions voisines comme l’Islande, mais également en Europe du Nord avec les monarchies scandinaves. Quelques années après le peuplement du Groenland, les Norrois entament une dernière étape d’exploration le long des côtes nord-américaines et établissent même un avant-poste sur l’île de Terre-Neuve.

Au Groenland et plus généralement dans la société norroise, le bois est traditionnellement au cœur des activités quotidiennes et donne lieu à de nombreuses formes d’artisanat, locales et importées. Malgré la présence de quelques arbres et arbustes, les îles de l’Atlantique nord sont généralement faiblement dotées en ressources ligneuses. Toutefois, la présence de bois flottés permet aux populations norroises de continuer à utiliser ce matériau pour la fabrication d’objets au quotidien, la construction de bâtiments et navires ou encore la production de charbon de bois. Grâce aux liens économiques et politiques forts entretenus avec l’Europe scandinave, les flux de marchandises et de matériaux sont également à prendre en compte dans la problématique de l’accès au matériau bois.

L’étude des différents types de bois (bois flotté, bois de pied natif du Groenland, bois importés depuis l’Europe et bois importés depuis les côtes américaines), de leurs provenances et leur gestion, combinée à l’analyse du mobilier en contexte archéologique, permettent d’appréhender la circulation des hommes et des biens dans cette région de marge. Choisir le bois comme focus de recherche permet un éclairage inédit des modes de vie norrois et de leurs productions matérielles, de l’organisation des réseaux d’échanges, de la gestion des ressources ligneuses et des stratégies adaptatives de ces sociétés face à des environnements singuliers, particulièrement fragiles face aux fluctuations climatiques de la période médiévale.
